The Rapid Expansion of Ajax on The Web
Wednesday, 25 April 2007

A year ago, most web developers were not fully aware of the capabilities surrounding Ajax. Indeed, the system was largely obscure. However, this has greatly changed in the last twelve months. Ajax has gone from being rare to being a household name in the web development community.

While many people make the mistake of thinking that Ajax is a new technology, those who have studied it know that its foundation has existed for nearly a decade, and it was only through recent advances in technology that it has reached the popularity it enjoys today.

When the world wide web was first introduced, many people around the world saw its capabilities. They knew that it was far more than a temporary fad. They knew it was permanent, and they knew it would transform the way in which we do business, enjoy entertainment, and interact and communicate with friends and family.

While people were impressed with the potential of web based applications, they often complained about how slow they were in comparsion to desktop applications. Because the speed of these applications were dependent on the Internet, they were quite slow.

Good sides of AJAX technology

why should I use this technology in my applications

Ajax hype is in full swing. Ajax may be the most promising "new" UI technology since HTML, but there are now discussions of whether and when Ajax is going to displace Windows and Office. Over the top I think.

At the same time, there is a very compelling case to look to Ajax for Internet services, ASPs, B2C and B2B applications, and especially Email/messaging and collaboration (see more).

Ajax Mistakes
Thursday, 18 January 2007

Mistakes made when developing with Ajax. This list is editable and made collaboratively, anyone can add to it or edit it, or check out the original post.

Please place comments at the bottom.

Using Ajax for the sake of Ajax.

Sure Ajax is cool, and developers love to play with cool technology, but Ajax is a tool, not a toy. A lot of Ajax isn’t seriously needed to improve usability but rather experiments in what Ajax can do or trying to fit Ajax somewhere where it isn’t needed.

Breaking the back button

The back button is a great feature of the standard web site user interface. Unfortunately, the back button doesn’t mesh very well with Javascript. Keeping back button functionality is one reason not to go with a pure Javascript web app.

Keep in mind however that good web design provides the user with everything they would need to successfully navigate your site, and never relies on web browser controls.

CSS, AJAX, Web 2.0 & Search Engines
Thursday, 11 January 2007

Shari Thurow from Grantanstic Design

CSS is an html addition allowing webmasters to control design, placement of elements, etc. You can use it to change the look of a site very quickly and easily. It also decreases the download time of the page. It is also easier to control the exact positioning of elements on a page. CSS formatted text links easily communicate visited/unvisited links.

CSS Disadvantages:
- End users must have font installed on their computers or the page will not display as designers intended
- Usability testing and focus groups might show that users prefer a font that is not commonly installed on all computers
- CSS formatted hyperlinks can dominate the content of a web page, making the content appear unfocused.
