How Web 2.0 Affects SEO Strategy
Wednesday, 23 May 2007

"Web 2.0" was originally coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004. Web 2.0 properties are perceived as harbingers of second-generation Web usage, such as interactive communities and hosted services that facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.

"Web 2.0" is also one of the most overused and abused terms on Wall Street, sublimely crafted to reinvigorate investing in online entities that remain rooted in Web 1.0 technologies. Even though much of the machinery behind the Web remains relatively unchanged -- just upgraded, versioned, and rebundled -- people surfing the Web have changed. Web netizens have progressed beyond solely seeking information to embracing greater levels of interaction, even if it's virtual.

It's not enough anymore to deliver goods as promised from an e-commerce site. Merely informing your online audience of breaking news is passé, and amusing visitors with quirky applets is seriously behind the times.

To succeed on the Web today, you must engage your visitors so they return repeatedly. Toward this end, some Web 2.0 platforms could be your site's savior; others could be its online demise. Either way, much of the discovery depends on your search channel. This is where things get very interesting for those who seek greater visibility.

Some Web 2.0 content management systems, such as blogs and wikis, are primed and relatively optimal for search engine visibility straight out of the box. Google, in particular, seems to adore blogs. Blogs and wikis have essentially replaced outdated forums, third-party product reviews, comments in guest books, and user groups because specific elements inherent to blogs and wikis are naturally search engine optimized. They're textually rich, extensively interlinked, frequently updated, and rooted in semantic markup.

The Business Aspect of Web 2.0

Companies Slow To React To Web 2.0

Despite the fact that Web 2.0 is currently one of the most popular terms on the web, most companies have been slow to adopt it. Many experts feel that the primary reason for this is because the concept of improving company processes with online tools is not a new concept.

Despite this, there are a number of differences between Web 2.0 and traditional online business tools. While the companies who embrace Web 2.0 are likely to be the industry leaders of tomorrow, the days may be numbered for companies that fail to utilize the capabilities of this system.

One of the most fundamental aspects of Web 2.0 is RSS. While many brick and mortar businesses have taken the step of building a website for the company, this is not enough to deal with the ever changing digital market.

One reason that many of these companies aren't embracing Web 2.0 technologies is because the vast majority of business leaders do not understand it. While they know the Internet is important for companies that want to compete in a global market, they can't see the importance of using Web 2.0.

Ajax Graphics Enhancement Tools
Monday, 23 April 2007
When most people think of Ajax, they think of the ability to have changes occur on webpages without having to reload them. They also think about of the high levels of interactivity that they can achieve. Most importantly, many developers are waiting for the way where they will be able to use web applications that are just as robust as their desktop counterparts.

However, many people fail to take into consideration the graphical issues of this collection of technologies. This phenomenon is a result of Web 2.0. A great emphasis was placed on the experience of the user. An important aspect of this is the creation of new ways to present information to viewers.

Peepel - Online Office Suite
Tuesday, 17 April 2007

Peepel interface screenshot Peepel is a free Online Office Suite of applications and tools, including Application Launcher, Taskmanager, FileManager, AccountManager in addition to the two major office application WebWriter and Websheet. Finally, a Peepel Panel which lay on the top page providing the different tools and options required by each application. I loved the interface, but features I have to say very basic, for example there is a file manager but you are not able to upload your files/images, Websheet application does not support graphics yet, ... etc. Peepel is written in PHP, very interesting Web OS experience in beta !

Gaia Ajax Widgets Q2 Released
Thursday, 12 April 2007
After months of development the Q2 - 2007 release is finally in the download area! We've worked a LOT on this release and we hope that you'll be pleased to see the changelog for this release since it's huge!
Some of the new features are:
  • New Accordion Control
  • New TreeView Control
  • Incremental updates of the ViewState

In addition to these features we've got at least 50 more features for you to play with in addition to that we've fixed at least 50 bugs from the previous version, so I don't think many people will be able to not find something they like in this release!
To put things a little bit into perspective we actually had to use two pages in our CMS system to make room for our changelog... ;)
For those interested in reading every detail the changelog can be found here but basically it's the longest changelog at least I've seen for a SW project ever!
All the people that bought the Q1 release will get the Q2 for free, so if you've paid for the Q1 release then just hit directly over to the download area and go berserk! If you haven't bought the Q1 we appreciate all the support we can get ;)
